Laguna Professional Coding Registry
What is the Laguna Professional Coding Registry? The Registry consists of a group of qualified inpatient and outpatient
HIM professional coders who wish to perform contract/backlog coding
for hospitals nationwide.
How can I become a member of the Registry?
To
become a member you must have at least 2 year’s experience
coding inpatient and/or outpatient medical records in an acute
care hospital environment, and hold at least one of the following
AHIMA credentials: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS. You must also pass the LMS
coding proficiency test as well as a background check. Once these
steps are successfully completed you will become a member of the
Registry.
Why should I want to be a member of the Registry?
The Registry is intended for those HIM coding professionals who
desire to be self-employed, and provide contract coding services
to hospitals. Many people with these goals have difficulty finding
clients on a full time basis. LMS is a nationwide coding consulting
firm with contacts in hundreds of hospitals. As a member of the
Registry you will be provided access to our customers who have
contract/backlog coding requirements.
How does the Registry work?
Once you become a member of the Registry you will specify the
kind of coding engagements that you are interested in being considered
for. If you are able to travel it will expand the contracting opportunities
available to you, but travel is not required. LMS markets contract
coding nationwide and as engagements become available that meet
your conditions, you will be contacted and introduced to the client
for the specified engagement. You will be responsible for all of
your own work related expenses, including travel. LMS will reimburse
you for travel related expenses and pay you in accordance with
your contract with the company and will be responsible for billing
and collecting from the client hospital.
Do I have to work full-time?
No. You are free to accept or decline contract coding engagements
as you see fit. Because you are self-employed, you may work as
much or as little as you like, subject to the availability of contract
coding engagements. LMS cannot guarantee you any specific quantity
of work but will perform its best efforts to see that you attain
the number of hours of work that you desire.
How do I get started?
• First,
you must contact LMS and submit a resume.
• You will be contacted immediately for a telephone interview and
will be sent our coding proficiency test.
• Once you have passed the test and we have completed our background
check, we will assist you in becoming an independent contractor
and set you up as a member of the Registry.
